What is Indianapolis Like?

Behind Chicago, Indianapolis, or Indy, is the second largest city in the Midwest and second largest state capitol, behind Phoenix.  The city’s population is 829,718 people with a population density of 2,273 people per square mile.  When you think of Indianapolis, you probably think of the Indianapolis 500 and the Indianapolis Colts.  Indy does have these and many other sporting events in the city, but there is also much more than sports here.

What is the Weather Like in Indianapolis?

Indy is a pretty standard Midwestern city when it comes to climate.  It has four seasons and has a humid continental climate.  Spring is pretty unpredictable when it comes to precipitation and temperature.  One week in the spring it could be in the 80s and then the next week it could snow.  Of course there are also thunderstorms and rain in the spring with precipitation reaching four inches per month on average. 

The summers in Indy are hot and humid with the hottest month being July with the average high temperature being 85 and the lowest 66.  Temperatures in the summer can reach into the mid to upper 90s for several days, though, and it is still rather rainy with three to four inches falling per month.  Fall is pretty much like the spring, as in that it is generally pleasant weather.  You don’t get as many thunderstorms or fast temperature shifts in the fall, though.  Winter in Indianapolis is pretty cold in general.  January is the coldest month where the average high is 36 and the low is 20, and some nights can dip into the negative digits.  Snow for the year in Indianapolis totals about 26 inches per year.

What are the Neighborhoods Like in Indianapolis?

Downtown – Downtown Indy is the motor of the city.  It the home to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the RCA Dome, and Conseco Fieldhouse, where you can watch racing, the Colts, or the Pacers play.  There are also great local shops downtown, plus tons of restaurants.  A one bedroom apartment for rent in Downtown Indy will be about $980 per month.  The Bottom Line: lots to do, many restaurants, reasonable rent

Mass Ave – Come over to the artsy side of Indianapolis.  Mass Ave is east of downtown and is home to local art venues, restaurants, boutiques, and theatres.  It is also home to the Indianapolis City Market, where you can find craft beers, fresh produce, baked goods and more.  A one bedroom apartment costs about $600 per month in rent on Mass Ave.  The Bottom Line: local art scene , reasonable rent, close to downtown

Old Northside – Old Northside is a historical neighborhood which is home to lovely Victorian homes.  It is quiet, contains parks, and isn’t too far from downtown.  One of the parks, Shawn Grove, is a children’s park, and another is a soccer park.  It is also just south of the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, the world’s largest children’s museum.  A two bedroom apartment for rent will be about $765 per month in Old Northside.  The Bottom Line: quiet, lots of parks, close to the Children’s Museum, close to downtown
