What is New York Like?

New York City is the most populous city in the United States with 8,244,910 people in its 468.48 square miles, which brings the population density to 27,243.06 persons per square mile.  This makes it the most densely populated city in the US, and with all these people also come over 800 languages spoken in the city. This makes it the world’s most linguistically diverse city in the world.

New York has endless things to do and see in the city.  From Times Square and Central Park to Broadway and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, there isn’t a shortage on things to do and see.

What’s the Weather Like in New York?

New York has a humid continental climate, where each season sees about the same amount of precipitation, whether it is rain or snow.  About 58% of the year will experience some sort of sunshine.  Summer is hot and humid with an average of 77 degrees in July.  Winter in New York is cold with the average for January being 32 degrees.  Because it is shielded by the Appalachian Mountains, New York is actually a little warmer than cities south of it like Pittsburgh and Cincinnati.  You can still expect to see about 27 inches of snow fall per year in the city, though.  Summer and fallcan be a mixed bag of weather, with temperatures ranging from chilly to warm and humidity low to mild.  There is a chance for tropical storms and hurricanes in the city, but they are very rare.

What are the Boroughs Like in New York?

Manhattan – From SoHo to Little Italy, and Central Park to Times Square, Manhattan is the heart of New York City.  And this heart doesn’t come cheap.  Expect to be paying around $3,000 per month for a one bedroom apartment for rent here.  A small studio apartment for rent is slightly less expensive with rent costing about $2,300 per month in Manhattan.  You won’t be far away from great restaurants and nightlife while you’re in Manhattan, either.  If you can afford it and love the city, Manhattan is the place for you.

The Bronx–The Bronx is the northernmost New York borough, located north of Manhattan and Queens.  You’ll find that there are many parks in The Bronx including the New York Botanical Gardens, the Bronx Zoo, and Yankee Stadium.  In fact, about a quarter of The Bronx’s land is open space even though it is the third most densely populated county in the US.  The Bronx is also cheaper than Manhattan for finding apartments to rent.  A one bedroom apartment will cost you about $1,100 per month in rent.

Queens–Queens is actually the second largest borough of New York City and would be the fourth most densely populated city in the US if it were its own independent city.  You will find that Queens is extremely diverse.  With 46% of the population being foreign born, this makes it the most diverse urban area in the world.  Not only are the people diverse, housing also varies from large apartment buildings to single family homes.  A two bedroom apartment will cost you about $1,700 per month.  It is also worth noting that the Mets stadium is located in Queens.

Staten Island–Staten Island is a southwest borough and is the least populated of the boroughs and has the most suburban feel.  The North Shore features large Victorian homes and the most urban part of Staten Island.  You’ll find more modern suburb-style neighborhoods to the south in The South Shore.  A one bedroom apartment for rent in Staten Island will cost you about $1,330 per month.  If you want to get to Manhattan via car, you’ll have to go through Brooklyn or New Jersey, but the Staten Island Ferry will take you on the water, providing you with a great view of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island while you’re at it.

Brooklyn–Say hello to the most populated borough of New York and the second largest in area!  Brooklyn has always been a go to for immigrants in the city and you’ll find that the majority of the neighborhoods have a primary ethnic group.  Over the years neighborhoods have become more culturally diverse, though.  A two bedroom apartment for rent in Brooklyn will cost about $1,900 per month.  Don’t worry about getting around in Brooklyn; public transportation is plentiful here.  It will help you get to cool Brooklyn spots like Coney Island and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.
