What is San Antonio Like?

San Antonio is the second largest city in Texas with a population of 1.3 million and the seventh largest city in the United States.  The population density for the city is 3,400 persons per square mile.  San Antonio is famous for Spanish Missions along the San Antonio River with the most famous being the Alamo.  That’s not all that is along the San Antonio River!  One of San Antonio’s most popular destinations, second to the Alamo, is the River Walk.  The River Walk is one story beneath the streets and features pathways to great shops and restaurants with outside dining.  Two more large attractions that San Antonio offers are Sea World and Six Flags Fiesta Texas.  San Antonio is also home to the NBA team, the San Antonio Spurs.

What is the Weather Like in San Antonio?

San Antonio has a humid subtropical climate, but the weather can be either dry or humid depending on the winds.  July and August are the warmest months in San Antonio where the average is 95 for the high, and January is the coolest month on average for the city with the average low being 41 degrees.  San Antonio is located in one of the most flood prone regions in North America, and although infrequent, it is possible for the city to experience tornadoes. 

What Neighborhoods are Close to Downtown San Antonio?

Downtown San Antonio has a lot to offer, so why wouldn’t you want to live there?Although the closer you get to the Alamo and the River Walk,the more expensive the apartments become.If you are willing to pay more in rent and you can afford it, you will be within arm’s reach of wonderful restaurants, shopping, and nightlife. Singles, professionals, and anyone else that enjoys city life will love finding a great place to rent close to downtown San Antonio.

Alta Vista – Located just north and slightly west of downtown, Alta Vista is a great middle to upper middle class midtown neighborhood.  You can find housing of all sorts here ranging from large, single family homes, duplexes, and lots of apartment buildings.  It is also very close to San Pedro Park and San Antonio College. The Bottom Line: close to downtown, parks, wide range of housing options

Which San Antonio Neighborhoods are Family Friendly?

Lucky for you, San Antonio doesn’t lack in family friendly neighborhoods.  Whether you already have kids or you foresee kids in your future, the little bundles of joy are going to have a large impact on what neighborhood you choose to rent your apartment or home in.  Is the neighborhood safe? Are there good schools nearby, and what are the private school options?  How close is childcare to my house?  Are there parks and other fun kid-friendly places nearby? 

Terrell Hills – You’ll find that Terrell Hills is a nice and affluent neighborhood in San Antonio that’s located northeast of downtown.  It is quiet and has lots of great parks, schools for the kids, and grocery stores nearby.  The architecture also varies here from homes built in the 1920s to modern estates.  A two bedroom apartment for rent here is about $1,000 per month in Terrell Hills. The Bottom Line: variety of homes available, safe, close to parks and amenities

Shavano Park – Shavano Park is located in Northern San Antonio and is a more budget friendly version of Terrell Hills.  You still get the safety and good schools, but with slightly less expensive house prices.  A four bedroom house for rent here will cost about $1,300 per month.  The Bottom Line: variety of homes available, safe, close to parks and amenities, close to schools
