What is Washington DC Like?

Well, Washington is the capitol of the United States, so there are lots of politicians there.  Oh, the President lives there, too.  It’s located in between Maryland and Virginia and has a population of 617,996 with a population density of 10,065 people per square mile.  Although the federal government does account for 29% of the jobs in DC, there are also many law firms, lobbying firms, foreign embassies, and international organizations in Washington.  If you’re looking for a non-government related job in DC, you’ll probably find one in education, scientific research, or finance.  Georgetown University, George Washington University, and the Children’s National Medical Center employ many people in non-government positions.

For all of you history buffs and museum lovers, Washington DC is a dream come true.  There are all the national monuments and memorials ranging from the WWII memorial, the Vietnam Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, and many more.  Plus there is the National Mall, the National Archives where you can see the Declaration of Independence, the Library of Congress, and the Smithsonian Institution.

Washington DC is no stranger to sports.  All four major league sports are represented by the NBA’s Washington Wizards, the NHL’s Washington Capitals, the MLB’s Washington Nationals, the NFL’s Washington Redskins, and the MLS’s D.C. United.

One other thing to note is that traffic is pretty bad here, and almost 40% of the people who work in DC take public transportation to their jobs.  That is better than spending 70 hours a year stuck in traffic, which is tied with Chicago for the worst in the nation.

What is the Weather Like in Washington D.C.?

Washington is in a humid subtropical climate zone where residents experience four seasons.  Spring and fall are warm and pleasant.  Summer is hot on average with the average high in July reaching 88 degrees and the low 71.  It is also humid during the summer with the relative humidity averaging around 66%.  This brings frequent thunderstorms to the Capitol from which tornados can be produced.  Winter is cool, with the coldest temperatures for the year occurring in January, 44 for the high and 29 for the low.  Washington also experiences about 15 inches of snow falling per year.  Every four to six years, blizzards affect the Capitol, with the worst being nor’easters.

What are the Neighborhoods Like in Washington D.C.?

Dupont Circle – There is a lot to do in Dupont Circle. It’s in the northwest section of DC and is full of nice parks, trees, and beautiful homes.  You’ll find lots of single family homes but you’ll also find some great apartment buildings here.  A one bedroom apartment for rent in Dupont Circle is about $2,800 per month.  Traffic is an issue here, and the neighborhood is also very expensive.  The Bottom Line: expensive to live here, terrible traffic and parking, crowded, great restaurants, variety of housing options

Georgetown – Georgetown is a popular neighborhood with a great history.  That comes with a price, though which makes it a neighborhood with a high cost of living.  Ritzy restaurants and shops are plentiful here.  You will also find gorgeous, elegant homes in Georgetown along with apartments and condos for rent.  A one bedroom apartment for rent in Georgetown will be about $1,960 per month.  The Bottom Line: expensive to live here, terrible traffic and parking, great restaurants, elegant, shopping
